A comparison of monitoring methods for inferring demographics of a pond‐breeding amphibian population over 14 years

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 6, August 2026.
We used 4 sampling methods to estimate or index the abundance and sex ratio of spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) over 14 years. The present study highlights the importance of considering individual heterogeneity in capture probability when estimating abundance of pond‐breeding amphibians from capture data with imperfect detection. Population ecology of Chaetophractus vellerosus: the first report for an armadillo in South America

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2017
The aim of this work was to obtain the first estimates of survival rates (S), capture probability (p) and life expectancy for armadillos in South America by analyzing capture-mark-recapture data obtained from a population of Chaetophractus vellerosus ...

Demographic responses to population recovery illustrated by 30 years of monitoring a once critically endangered parrot

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, August 2026.
These findings highlight the dynamic nature of demographic processes throughout population recovery and emphasise the value of continued monitoring beyond apparent recovery to detect density‐dependent shifts in demographic rates of wildlife populations.

Residual diagnostics for assessing closed population capture–recapture models

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 8, Page 2277-2284, August 2026.
Abstract Capture–recapture models provide a statistical framework for estimating demographic parameters from incomplete observation data, where not all individuals in a population are detected during sampling. Assessing the fit of such models is crucial for reliable inference.

High Levels of Straying in Returning, Repeat‐Spawning Atlantic Salmon Between Two Neighbouring Danish Rivers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
We studied the seaward and return migration of Atlantic salmon kelts from both wild and hatchery origin in River Skjern, Denmark. Of the 199 tagged animals, 110 reached the ocean (55%). Only 10 kelts were recorded returning after spending more than 1 year at sea.

Accounting for heterogeneity when estimating stopover duration, timing and population size of red knots along the Luannan Coast of Bohai Bay, China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
To successfully perform their long‐distance migrations, migratory birds require sites along their migratory routes to rest and refuel. Monitoring the use of so‐called stopover and staging sites provides insights into (a) the timing of migration and (b ...

Extreme polygyny results in intersex differences in age-dependent survival of a highly dimorphic marine mammal

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2023
Developmental differences in vital rates are especially profound in polygamous mating systems. Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) are highly dimorphic and extremely polygynous marine mammals.

Spatially explicit capture–recapture models for relative density

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Spatially explicit capture–recapture (SECR) methods are used widely to estimate animal population density and related parameters. Maximum likelihood has been applied to two flavors of the SECR model—a full model that includes absolute density as a spatially varying parameter, and a model conditional on the number of detected individuals that ...

Evaluation of abundance indexes in open population studies: a comparison in populations of small mammals in southern Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Many manuscripts comparing populations and/or analysing the structure of animal communities use indexes of captures as synonymous of abundance. However, the basic methods more suitable to this assumption - probabilistic estimates based on equal capture ...

Estimation of Time-Specific Survival Rates from Tag-Resighting Samples: A Generalization of the Jolly-Seber Model [PDF]

open access: yesBiometrics, 1983
