Journal Bearing Performance

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1935
Abstract This paper contains an application of the hydrodynamical theory of lubrication to the practical design of journal bearings. In a simplified method satisfactory for most engineering applications the authors consider the journal bearing as a plane bearing.

Bearing characteristic of journal bearing applied biomimetics

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract Journal bearings have been improved by reducing friction and increasing stability via various methods. However, if future applications require even better performance, a new approach will be required. In this study, we aimed to improve the bearing characteristics of journal bearings by incorporating biomimetics.

Porous Metal Journal Bearings

2013
Porous journal bearings are made of a porous bush impregnated with oil, acting as an oil reservoir, and so avoiding any external oil supply, for lubricating the contact between a rotating shaft and the stationary bush (or sometimes between a stationary shaft and a rotating bush).

Automotive Bearing Systems—Journal Bearings

2012
The principal use for journal bearings in automotive applications is for the crankshaft bearings, piston pin joint, balancer shafts, and crankshafts. These can either be half shells in which a split is required for assembly (e.g., crankshaft bearings) or bushes that can be inserted without a split (e.g., piston pin joints). For engine bearings, the oil

Narrow journal bearings

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2002
In this report, numerical analyses of very narrow journal bearings are presented. The pressure distribution was determined for a number of different width-diameter ratios and eccentricities. For each combination, a number of relevant dimensionless design quantities were computed.

Counterrotating Journal Bearings

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1962
A theoretical derivation is given showing that whenever the center of curvature of a bearing does not coincide with its center of rotation, synchronous counterrotation will produce a load capacity. Test results are given for a number of bearing designs that operated successfully under synchronous counterrotation with load capacities beyond 1500 psi ...

Dynamically loaded journal bearings

1975
The aim of the work reported in this thesis was to develop a method, suitable for general design work, to determine the stability of a simple rotor mounted in hydrodynamic bearings, The rotor model used was a simple spring mass system, but the bearing model allowed a comprehensive range of bearing cross-sectional shapes and grooves to be assessed.

SELF‐OILED JOURNAL BEARINGS

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1978
CERTAIN bearing applications require the use of a lubrication system contained within the bearing housing and independent of any outside systems or power sources. Marine main propulsion lineshaft bearings often fall into this category and the use of a disc‐scraper system for oil supply represents one solution.
