Automotive Bearing Systems—Journal Bearings
2012The principal use for journal bearings in automotive applications is for the crankshaft bearings, piston pin joint, balancer shafts, and crankshafts. These can either be half shells in which a split is required for assembly (e.g., crankshaft bearings) or bushes that can be inserted without a split (e.g., piston pin joints). For engine bearings, the oil

Functioning of Journal Bearings
1969When a journal bearing operates under conditions of hydrodynamic lubrication there is no contact between the rotating journal and the fixed bearing surface. In steady running the journal assumes an eccentric position, described as the journal attitude, in which the journal centre is displaced from the centre of curvature of the bearing surface in such ...

The Magnetohydrodynamic Journal Bearing
Journal of Basic Engineering, 1963An analysis of an infinite journal bearing is presented for the case of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetohydrodynamic form of Reynolds’ bearing equation is derived and solved for the pressure distribution. The load carrying capacity is determined from the pressure distribution.

1969
The dynamic characteristics of the journal bearings play a major part in the vibration of turbomachinery. Knowledge of these vibration effects was long purely empirical. A bearing design to avoid one type of oil whirl was described in 1925 [25]. Bearing characteristics were known to affect critical speed phenomena, but the magnitude of the change in ...

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2002
In this report, numerical analyses of very narrow journal bearings are presented. The pressure distribution was determined for a number of different width-diameter ratios and eccentricities. For each combination, a number of relevant dimensionless design quantities were computed.

cavitation in journal bearings
Scientific Lubrication, 1953The existence of cavitation in the divergent part of a lubricating oil film has long been presumed, but its occurrence has so far been demonstrated only in a very limited way and its consequences are scarcely appreciated. The investigation now described provides on a small scale a more definite indication of certain primary effects of cavitation in a ...
