Abstract When human beings make judgments, they often act intentionally in seeking and scrutinizing evidence and in deciding whether to go along with it. This intentional activity typically leads them to form corresponding beliefs and related attitudes: on–off beliefs most obviously, and by implication scalar beliefs as well.

Although the effect of 'control' on sensed pain has been extensively studied and discussed, recent findings seem to be at odds with the substantial evidence for a robust motor-based sensory attenuation effect - an indirect marker for one's sense of agency.
