Ectopic thyroid carcinoma in the left atrium in a horse

Summary A 25‐year‐old Irish sport horse was presented for investigation of a 7‐day history of apathy and lethargy. Clinical examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnoea, distended, pulsating jugular veins and ventral oedema. Serum biochemistry showed azotaemia.

Discospondylitis as a consequence of jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis in a Standardbred gelding

Summary This report describes the identification of C7‐T1 discospondylitis on myelography and confirmed on postmortem computed tomography and necropsy in a 4‐year‐old Standardbred gelding as the consequence of jugular vein catheterisation and secondary septic thrombophlebitis. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from both sites.

Summary Permanent tracheostomy is sometimes required in horses with severe and irreversible obstructive upper airway conditions. Abnormal respiratory noise and altered vocalisation may be of concern to owners and its influence on mare‐foal recognition and bonding should be considered.

Spinal ataxia and computed tomography findings in a Poitou donkey affected with congenital occipitoatlantoaxial malformation

Summary A 3‐year‐old Poitou donkey was referred for a computed tomography (CT) examination of the cervical spine due to acute deterioration of spinal ataxia. Neurological assessment revealed restricted neck mobility, hypermetria and circumduction of all limbs, indicating a grade 2 out of 5 ataxia.
