Vernal growth of vocal control nucleus Area X, but not HVC, precedes gonadal recrudescence in wild black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus)

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, EarlyView.
According to the longstanding model of vernal recrudescence of the songbird vocal control system, upregulation of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐gonadal axis, and specifically testosterone (T), promotes growth first of HVC, and then Area X. In this study, we show that in black‐capped chickadees, Area X is already fully recrudesced ahead of HPG axis ...

Midline Head Position for Preterm Infants in the First 72 h: A Pilot Randomised Control Trial

open access: yesJournal of Paediatrics and Child Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim Midline head positioning for preterm infants in the first 72 h of life may prevent intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH). The feasibility of conducting a RCT was explored, namely (1) acceptability of the recruitment and consenting process, (2) practicality of recruitment within 4 h after birth, (3) protocol compliance, and (4) staff ...

Starch Allowance and Muscle Enzyme Activity in Healthy Standardbred Trotters Trained by Professional Trainers

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT It is generally accepted that plasma muscle enzyme activity of creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) may increase in racehorses after exercise and racing, indicating muscle fibre damage and/or increased leakage from muscle fibres.

Hypercoagulability identified in dogs with chronic enteropathy using a point‐of‐care viscoelastic assay

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objectives Thromboelastography (TEG) using the TEG 6s, a point‐of‐care viscoelastic assay, was prospectively evaluated in dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE). Additionally, the study determined whether disease activity, assessed using the Canine Chronic Enteropathy Clinical Activity Index (CCECAI), correlated with TEG 6s parameters.
