A Race to the Stars and Beyond: How the Soviet Union’s Success in the Space Race Helped Serve as a Projection of Communist Power

open access: yes, 2019
In the modern era, the notion of space travel is generally one of greater acceptance and ease than in times previously. Moreover, a greater number of nations (and now even private entities) have the technological capabilities to launch manned and ...

What fuel for a rocket? [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Fisica, 49, 191 (2003), 2012
Elementary concepts from general physics and thermodynamics have been used to analyze rocket propulsion. Making some reasonable assumptions, an expression for the exit velocity of the gases is found. From that expression one can conclude what are the desired properties for a rocket fuel.

The Deflector Selector: A Machine Learning Framework for Prioritizing Hazardous Object Deflection Technology Development

open access: yes, 2018
Several technologies have been proposed for deflecting a hazardous Solar System object on a trajectory that would otherwise impact the Earth. The effectiveness of each technology depends on several characteristics of the given object, including its orbit

The Ultimate Limits of the Relativistic Rocket Equation. The Planck Photon Rocket [PDF]

open access: yesActa Astronautica, Vol. 136, July 2017, Pages 144-147, 2018
In this paper we look at the ultimate limits of a photon propulsion rocket. The maximum velocity for a photon propulsion rocket is just below the speed of light and is a function of the reduced Compton wavelength of the heaviest subatomic particles in the rocket. We are basically combining the relativistic rocket equation with Haug's new insight on the
