Can juvenile supply predict future abundance of large-bodied reef fishes?

Marine Environmental Research
The extent to which juvenile abundance can predict future populations of lethrinids at Ningaloo Reef was assessed using size frequency data collected over 13 consecutive years. Annual abundance of juvenile lethrinids (2 years old making it difficult to accurately quantify the overall size of future lethrinid populations.

Influence of wetland hydroperiod on diversity and abundance of metamorphosing juvenile amphibians

Wetlands Ecology and Management, 1989
Numbers of successfully metamorphosing juvenile amphibians were tabulated at three wetlands in South Carolina, U.S.A. using terrestrial drift fences with pitfall traps. A relatively undisturbed Carolina bay was studied for eight years, a partially drained Carolina bay for four years, and a man-made borrow pit for three years.

Effects of seagrass habitat fragmentation on juvenile blue crab survival and abundance

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2002
Seagrasses form temporally dynamic, fragmented subtidal landscapes in which both large- and small-scale habitat structure may influence faunal survival and abundance. We compared the relative influences of seagrass (Zostera marina L.) habitat fragmentation (patch size and isolation) and structural complexity (shoot density) on juvenile blue crab ...

Abundance, Growth, and Interactions of Juvenile Steelhead Relative to Time of Emergence

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1988
Abstract Growth, interactions, and final densities of juvenile steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss (formerly Salmo gairdneri) emerging early versus later were compared in laboratory stream channels. When the two groups of juveniles were held together 1–2 months, early emerging fish generally outnumbered late fish about 2 to 1.

Indirect consequences of fishing: reduction of coralline algae suppresses juvenile coral abundance

Coral Reefs, 2012
Removing predatory fishes has effects that cascade through ecosystems via interactions between species and functional groups. In Kenyan reef lagoons, fishing-induced trophic cascades produce sea urchin-dominated grazing communities that greatly reduce the overall cover of crustose coralline algae (CCA).

Flow and Habitat Effects on Juvenile Fish Abundance in Natural and Altered Flow Regimes

Ecological Applications, 2001
Conserving biological resources native to large river systems increasingly depends on how flow-regulated segments of these rivers are managed. Improving management will require a better understanding of linkages between river biota and temporal variability of flow and instream habitat.

On the factors influencing juvenile flatfish abundance in the lower Severn Estuary, England

Netherlands Journal of Sea Research, 1994
Bridgwater Bay within the Bristol Channel, Somerset, England is a nursery ground for sole, Solea solea, and dab, Limanda limanda, during the autumn and winter. Flounder, Platichthys flesus, both juveniles and adults, are common during the summer. Using a 13-year data set of fish in the bay, correlations were studied between climatic, predatory and ...

Juvenile masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) abundance and stream habitat relationships in northern Japan

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1997
Relationships between abundance of juvenile masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and stream habitat were analyzed on two spatial scales, stream reach and channel unit, in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Reach-scale analyses revealed that high water temperatures limited the salmon population level and that the salmon abundance increased with cover availability ...
