Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Simulation Data-Based Dual Domain Network (Sim-DDNet) for Motion Artifact Reduction in MR Images

open access: yesMagnetochemistry
Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly susceptible to motion artifacts that degrade fine structural details and undermine quantitative analysis.

Imaging incorporation of circulating docosahexaenoic acid into the human brain using positron emission tomography

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2009
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) is a critical constituent of the brain, but its metabolism has not been measured in the human brain in vivo. In monkeys, using positron emission tomography (PET), we first showed that intravenously injected [1-11C]DHA ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Trends in Weekly Reported Net use by Children During and after Rainy Season in Central Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is one of the principal interventions to prevent malaria in young children, reducing episodes of malaria by 50% and child deaths by one fifth.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Optimizing root physiology and soil nutrient balance in rice–wheat sequence using polyhalite for enhanced profitability in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India

open access: yesScientific Reports
Excessive application of high-analysis fertilizers disrupts ecosystem balance and raise environmental concerns. Potassium (K) and sulphur (S) are crucial nutrients for plants optimum growth and development. Potassium uptake exceeds nitrogen (N) by almost
