Turbofan noise generation. Volume 2: Computer programs [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of a package of computer programs developed to calculate the in duct acoustic mods excited by a fan/stator stage operating at subsonic tip speed is described.

On the β$$ \beta $$‐effect in the baroclinic instability of a continuously stratified atmosphere

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We solve the quasi‐geostrophic equation numerically to analyze baroclinic instability in a continuously stratified atmosphere. On the β$$ \beta $$‐plane, deviations from classical models alter instability growth rates and modal structures, leading to the emergence of unstable lobes and a stable region at very large wavelengths.

Validation of Computational Methods for Free-Water Jet Diffusion and Pressure Dynamics in a Plunge Pool

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study investigates the numerical modeling of a high-velocity circular free-water jet impinging into a plunge pool, focusing on the simulation and validation of mean and fluctuating dynamic pressures on the pool floor.

A study of a free convective boundary layer using a parcel‐based Lagrangian model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We study the development of a convective boundary layer forced by surface heating and growing into a stably stratified atmosphere above. We compare our results with several recent comprehensive direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies and find broad agreement, and often close quantitative agreement, despite fundamental differences in the numerical ...

The stratospheric gravity wave field produced by a supercell

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Supercells are a class of long‐lasting thunderstorms with rotating updrafts that often cause severe weather, hail, and tornadoes. This study uses numerical simulations to characterize the stratospheric gravity waves that are caused by these storms.

A case study of temperature tendency mechanisms operating over northern Africa during and following midlatitude winter troughs

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
An Iberia‐Central Mediterranean trough sequence (7–10 February 2018) delivers anomalous low‐level temperature tendencies attributable to dynamics across most of northern Africa, with warming over northeastern Africa, especially 10–12 February into the eastern Sahel. An ECMWF product attributes the tendencies (see Figure).

Impact of small‐scale gravity waves on tracer transport

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We extend a gravity wave (GW) parametrization to calculate the tracer transport due to the GW–Stokes drift and next‐order effects, where the approach is validated by comparing coarse‐resolution simulations with parametrized GWs to high‐resolution, wave‐resolving reference simulations.

Ameliorating a vertical axis wind turbine performance utilizing a time-varying force plasma actuator

open access: yesScientific Reports
Controlling wind flow on vertical axis wind turbine blades is an effective technique for enhancing their performance. Modern equipment such as plasma actuators have gained significant attention for their ability to control, and improve the flow behavior ...

Quantum Iterative Methods for Solving Differential Equations with Application to Computational Fluid Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Quantum Technologies, EarlyView.
Quantum algorithms for differential equations are developed with applications in computational fluid dynamics. The methods follow an iterative simulation framework, implementing Jacobi and Gauss–Seidel schemes on quantum registers through linear combinations of unitaries.

Impacts of a Century‐Old Urban Dam on Water Quality and Habitat Composition, Flint River, Flint, MI

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dams significantly influence river ecosystems worldwide, fragmenting habitats, altering sediment transport, and reducing biodiversity. Urban rivers are especially vulnerable, where dams compound stressors such as channelization, pollution, and degraded riparian zones. In response, dam removals are a growing restoration tool globally.
