Improved Half‐Space Cooling Model Reconciles Bathymetry and Thermal Evolution of the Southwest Subbasin, South China Sea

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The bathymetry of marginal sea basins commonly deviates from depths calculated by classical lithospheric cooling models, yet the controlling mechanisms remain debated. Here, using 19 seismic profiles and corrected local heat‐flow data, we apply an improved half‐space cooling model within a two‐stage reconstruction to reassess thermal ...

Making Mining Licit: Gold, Commodification, and the Everyday Performance of Law in Colombia

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 128, Issue 3, Page 480-493, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Ethnographies of resource‐making have shown that the extraction of resource value from objects is premised on obviating the emplaced lifeworlds that surrounded objects before they traveled to consumer markets. The pantropical biodiversity footprint of oil palm

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
Although oil palm expansion is a main driver of tropical deforestation, this is the first study that integrates species‐specific habitats to assess oil palm's biodiversity footprint globally. We find that 4.5% of forest‐dependent species lost more than 1% of their potential habitats to oil palm; São Tomé and Sri Lanka have the highest per‐hectare ...
