Global Patterns, Drivers and Conservation Gaps of Freshwater Crabs: From Species Richness to Phylogenetic Diversity

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Freshwater crabs are ecologically vital benthic macroinvertebrates that sustain freshwater ecosystem functions, yet their limited dispersal and fragmented habitats make them vulnerable to human disturbance. Current conservation assessments for freshwater crabs remain incomplete, as most studies focus on species richness while neglecting ...

From hindrance to indirect protection: Ant‐mediated enemy‐free space for gall midges (Cecidomyiidae) on Macaranga myrmecophytes (Euphorbiaceae)

open access: yesEntomological Science, Volume 29, Issue 3, September 2026.
Ant presence was associated with lower gall density on Macaranga beccariana, whereas trees lacking ant defense had more galls and showed different parasitism patterns. Results from this natural experiment suggest that plant‐ants may indirectly influence gall midges through their effects on multitrophic interactions.

Conservation and management implications of genetic and geometric scale variation in the ancient fish giant featherback (Chitala lopis)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 109, Issue 3, Page 1558-1580, September 2026.
Abstract Giant featherback (Chitala lopis) is an ancient species of freshwater fish considered globally extinct until extant populations were re‐discovered in the Sundaland region of Indonesia in 2022. To improve management of the remaining populations, this study used genomic DNA and landmark‐based geometric morphometric analyses of fish scales to ...
