Toward Consistent Canopy Characterization From Low‐Cost UAV Imagery

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We show that UAV‐based crown segmentation can reliably characterize dominant canopy trees in a structurally complex tropical forest. Focusing on these key individuals improves the assessment of forest structure and supports ecological monitoring at multiple scales. ABSTRACT Monitoring tropical forest structure at landscape scale requires cost‐effective

Host Call Frequency Drives Attractiveness to an Eavesdropping Micropredator

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Acoustic sexual signals are vulnerable to interception by eavesdropping unintended receivers, and signals are thus influenced by interacting selection pressures. Frequencies of 0.5–1.4 kHz attracted frog‐biting midges (Corethrella spp.) and closely matched the lowest‐calling local frog species.

Distinct root‐associated fungal communities may account for the persistence of Podocarpus conifers in tropical forest

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Podocarps (Podocarpaceae) are one of the few lineages of conifers found in closed canopy tropical forests. They typically have highly restricted distributions that are associated with nutrient‐poor sites. Unlike other tree species, the presence of distinct nodule‐like structures allows their roots to be easily distinguished from those of co ...
