One out of ten independent components shows flipped polarity with poorer data quality: EEG database study

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 45, Issue 1, January 2024.
Polarities of independent components (ICs) are indeterminant. We found about 9% of ICs flip the initial tentative positive polarities to negative polarities when the algorithm converges. The polarity‐flipping ICs show less physiological validity. The IC polarity could be a novel criterion for evaluating ICs. Abstract Independent component analysis (ICA)
