Construction of dams and reservoirs in karst is historically known as a very risky task. Inspite of very detailed geophysical investigations and repeated sealing treatments, the possibility for dam failure cannot be eliminated. In the karst environment, with its highly random distribution of dissolution features, some uncertainties always remain.

Carbonates and Evaporites, 2011
The construction of an underground dam and reservoir to provide an artificial water storage and karst control groundwater discharge regime is one of the most complex systems of tapping structure in karst. There are not many examples of underground dams, which increase the importance of risk management in their construction.

Carbon biogeochemical processes in a subtropical karst river–reservoir system
Journal of Hydrology, 2020Abstract Cascade damming has seriously affected the hydrologic regimes and solutes transport of the river systems. However, the effect of damming on carbon cycle and the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, to reveal the effects of damming on riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transport, the water chemistry and stable ...

Integrated Workflow To Tackle Heterogeneous Karst Dominated Reservoirs: Kharyaga Example
SPE Russian Oil and Gas Exploration & Production Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2014Abstract Kharyaga Upper Devonian oil reservoir, developed through water injection, is part of a highly heterogeneous carbonate platform. Three sedimentary domains can be identified from South to North: a microbial reef-flat, back-barrier grainy shoals and a non-reservoir lagoon.

Analysing N-nitrosamine occurrence and sources in karst reservoirs, Southwest China
Environmental Geochemistry and HealthN-nitrosamines in reservoir water have drawn significant attention because of their carcinogenic properties. Karst reservoirs containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) are important drinking water sources and are susceptible to contamination because of the fast flow of various contaminants.

The Upper Jurassic ‘Malm’ carbonates of southern Germany are currently the most developed reservoir for geothermal energy production in Germany. Although many studies have investigated the Malm carbonate reservoir, few studies have focused on the palaeokarst system – despite the fact that the reservoir is frequently referred to as ‘Malmkarst’.

Water Research
Carbon migration, transformation, and emissions as CO2 in reservoir and lake systems have been extensively studied. However, uncertainties persist regarding carbon cycling variations in both karst and non-karst regions within large thermal stratified river-reservoir systems.

The paper presents a case of the Boljuncica reservoir which was built in 1970 in the Istria peninsula (Croatia). This is typical multipurpose reservoir, which was built in order to protect downstream area from flood, to storage water for irrigation, to control sediment transport, and to provide possibilities for recreation and fish cultivation.
