Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1582-1605, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Karst Vadose Zone Hydrology Explored Through Cave Drip Water Dynamics: The Roles of Soil, Epikarst and Climate

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 6, June 2026.
Cave drip rate monitoring in Nova Grgosova Cave reveals three types of drip sites: (1) predominantly constant, (2) seasonally varying and (3) mostly constant with occasional sharp increases. The observational data coupled with one‐dimensional water‐balance model demonstrates that evapotranspiration and soil–epikarst storage, rather than precipitation ...

Carbon and oxygen isotopic characteristics of karst fracture-cavity fillings and environmental significance: A case study of Ordovician Yingshan Formation in Tahe oilfield

open access: yes, 2023
Karst fracture-cavity of Ordovician Yingshan Formation is the main carbonate reservoir in Tahe oilfield. The development of karst fracture-cavity shows strong heterogeneity.

Simulation of Soil Water Content in Clayey Soils Where Dissolution and Precipitation of Pedogenic Carbonates Impact the Accuracy of Sensors Measuring Soil Water Content

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 6, June 2026.
This study deals with limitations of frequency domain reflectometry sensors, including data drift, when monitoring clayey soils with pedogenic carbonates. Despite these inaccuracies, the results demonstrate that corrected measurements of soil water content can still successfully calibrate hydrological models.

Study on formation conditions of high-quality reservoir of Sinian Dengying Formation in central Sichuan

open access: yes, 2023
Central Sichuan is located at the eastern high point of the Leshan-Longnvsi ancient uplift axis. With a large amount of oil and gas resources, the Sinian Dengying Formation has a good exploration prospect.

Regional Patterns and Regulatory Mechanisms of Aquatic Carbon Transfer in China

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Inland waters constitute vital components in the global carbon (C) cycle. Nevertheless, the regional patterns of aquatic carbon transfer across China remain poorly quantified, and their impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget remain unclear.

Paleokarst features and reservoir distribution in the Huanglong Formation of eastern Sichuan

open access: yesPetroleum Exploration and Development, 2011
The identification markers of paleokarst have been described in detail and include a combination of surface geology, drilling data and the isotopic characteristics of carbon, oxygen and strontium.

The hydrogeology of bromate contamination in the Hertfordshire Chalk: incorporating karst in predictive models

open access: yes, 2010
Point source contamination of groundwater by bromate (BrO3^-) in the Hertfordshire Chalk Aquifer forced the closure in 2000, of a major public supply ground- water abstraction and presents a continuing threat to regional water resources.

3-D seismic evidence of the effects of carbonate karst collapse on overlying clastic stratigraphy and reservoir compartmentalization

open access: yes, 1996
A multidisciplinary team, composed of stratigraphers, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, and geophysicists, studied a portion of Boonsville gas field in the Fort Worth Basin of north-central Texas to determine how modern geophysical, geological, and ...

Terrestrial Analogs to Titan for Geophysical Research

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Saturn's moon Titan exhibits remarkable parallels to the Earth in many geophysical and geological processes not found elsewhere in the solar system at the present day. These include a nitrogen atmosphere with a condensible gas—methane—replacing the Earth's water, leading to an active meteorology with rainfall and surface manifestations ...
