The Earth's Greatest Porous Media

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 7, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract How deeply does modern meteoric water circulate into the continental crust? How deep is the Earth's Critical Zone (CZ), the top layer of the continental lithosphere that co‐evolves with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, extending from vegetation canopy down to fresh bedrock and the base of active groundwater circulation?

Loss, persistence and reversal of phenotypic traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2119-2133, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The irreversibility of complex trait loss has long been a tenet of evolutionary biology. However, this idea is increasingly at odds with the numerous documented exceptions across the Tree of Life. We synthesise this growing body of evidence across a diverse array of taxa and traits, exploring the evolutionary conditions that enable ...

Modelling of water regime in karst

open access: yes, 2005
Underground flow regime in karst areas completely differs from flow in intergranular aquifers. Hydraulically, this flow can be better described as a system of reservoirs and pipes with flow under pressure and with free surface, than as underground flow in intergranular aquifer.

Scientists’ warning on the global destruction of rock outcrop ecosystems

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Rock outcrops are geological formations that harbor a highly specialized biota adapted to harsh environmental conditions that differ from their surrounding landscapes. They are globally distributed, especially in old, highly weathered landscapes, and can function as habitat islands containing high levels of endemism and distinct evolutionary ...

Long‐Term Effects of Biochar Addition on Diameter Growth in Young Established Boreal Scots Pine Stands

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2026.
Biochar application on top of the soil can be successful in already established and naturally regenerated boreal forest stands. Biochar tends to increase diameter and basal area growth. Increasing biochar dose enhanced growth response. Biochar induced growth response diminished 5 years after application.

The Unexpected Discovery of Paleocene? Coals in Outcrops Thought to Be Cambrian, Al Huqf, Oman

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Geology, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 1179-1194, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Two brown organic deposits were encountered whilst investigating kaolinitic claystones thought to occur at the base of a Cambrian formation at outcrop. The age of these organic deposits is probably Paleocene from palynology. Organic petrography shows that they are subbituminous coals with some oil source potential.
