A Study on the Applicability of the Linear Superposition Principle to Overland Flow Resistance Based on HR‐PIV Technology

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Previous studies have suggested that the linear superposition principle fails for thin‐layer overland flows, yet direct experimental evidence remains scarce. This work adopts high‐resolution particle image velocimetry (HR‐PIV) to measure the 2D flow fields of grain resistance and form resistance in thin‐layer overland flows.

Plants Uptake Substantial Water From the Surface Organic Layer in Highly Permeable Karst Critical Zones

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Plants growing in highly permeable karst critical zones are exposed to shallow soils and rapid hydrological turnover. The surface organic layer is recognized as a key ecohydrological interface in these environments, yet its direct contribution to plant water uptake has rarely been quantified.

Direct and Element‐Mediated Edaphic Effects Shape Resource‐Conservative Leaf Trait Variation Across Serpentine and Limestone Soils

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 5, September 2026.
Populations of closely related Epimedium taxa inhabiting serpentine and limestone soils converged toward resource‐conservative leaf trait syndromes despite strong differences in soil chemistry. Structural equation modeling revealed that edaphic variation was associated with leaf trait variation both directly and indirectly through shifts in leaf ...

Leaf‐Branch Coordination of Dehydration Resistance and Tree Invasion Success in Dry Ridge Forests of Subtropical Pacific Islands, Japan

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 5, September 2026.
Across tree species, coordinated structural and functional traits link leaves and branch wood. Native species have denser leaf and wood tissues and higher dehydration‐resistant branches, whereas invasive species have less dense leaf and wood tissues and lower dehydration resistance.
