Integrating field and numerical modeling methods for applied urban karst hydrogeology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Infrastructures constructed on unstable geologic formations are prone to subsidence. Data have been collected in the context of an upgrading project for a highway located beside a river dam constructed on gypsum-bearing formations.

Probabilistic characterization of seepage‐induced tunnel face failure via a two‐phase double‐point material point method

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
To address seepage‐induced tunnel face collapse, this study develops a two‐phase double‐point MPM framework to capture large‐deformation hydro‐mechanical interactions. Incorporating a cementation‐based constitutive model with dynamic permeability updates, the model is successfully validated against saturated granular‐column collapse experiments ...

Effect of Gravel on Soil Porosity and Water Infiltration of Lime Soil in Southwest Karst Area

open access: yesShuitu Baochi Xuebao
[Objective] Gravel is an important factor affecting soil porosity and water infiltration. Therefore, it is of great significance to determine the specific soil porosity characteristics that are impacted by gravel-induced changes.

Characterization of karst development and groundwater circulation in the middle part of the Jinshajiang fault zone

open access: yesDizhi lixue xuebao, 2022
The complex hydrogeological structure and abundant karst water in the carbonate rock distribution area in the Jinshajiang fault zone's middle section are essential threats to engineering safety. Based on karst landform and hydrogeological investigations,

Investigations of rapid groundwater flow and karst in the Chalk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This study, with fieldwork undertaken in the Pang and Lambourn catchments in Southern England, investigates the occurrence and distribution of rapid groundwater flow in the Chalk and evaluates the degree of karstification.

Ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with aspen (Populus tremuloides) roots yielded from Illumina sequencing

open access: yes, 2021
On August 24, 2019, Justine Karst and Nadir Erbilgin sampled a 30–50 cm segment of root from each of three aspen trees within each plot at the interface of the humus layer of the forest floor and mineral soil.

Renewable energy mapping in Northeastern Morocco: A geographic information system‐based comparison of geothermal, solar, and wind potential in the Guercif‐Guilliz and Beni Snassen regions

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract summarizes a geographic information system (GIS)‐based synthesis of renewable energy resources in Northeastern Morocco, focusing on the Guercif‐Guilliz and Beni Snassen areas. It visually presents the spatial distribution of solar irradiation and wind energy potential derived from available datasets, alongside their relationship ...

Mechanism of karst ground collapse and evaluation of disaster risk in Chengnan community, Yingde City, China

open access: yesCarsologica Sinica
Karst ground collapse is one of the most common geological hazards in karst areas. It is characterized by concealment, sudden occurrence and inhomogeneity, along with various other complex features.

Damage Characteristics and Stress Distribution Law of Overburden Rock in Multiple Mining of Close Coal Seams

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This study on close coal seams shows that multi‐seam mining increases the height of the fractured zone from approximately 26 m (single upper‐seam mining) to about 49 m. When the lower seam is mined after the extraction of the upper seam, the heights of both the caved zone and the fractured zone increase by approximately two times.

Bryozoan‐Rich Carbonate Units of the Erfoud Area (SE Morocco) Record Latest Katian to Early Hirnantian Interglacial Intervals

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
In this study, we re‐examine the depositional architecture of the Erfoud limestone in Morocco. Introducing new biostratigraphic constraints from chitinozoan assemblages, we show that Katian to Hirnantian bryozoan‐pelmatozoan meadows reflect flooding events linked to a series of interglacial transgressions known to have occurred immediately prior to the
