Alpine karst waters in Slovenia
Some basic characteristics of the alpine karst waters in Slovenia are presented. By the method of hydrological balance it was estimated that their groundwater reserves can supply a spring with an average discharge 115 m3/s. According to the comparison between the extent of the alpine karst and the EIONET-SI data base on springs it was stated, that for ...

ABSTRACT Swelling of clay‐sulfate rocks is a concern in geotechnical engineering that can damage infrastructure. In the historic town of Staufen in southwest Germany, geothermal drilling into a swellable anhydrite‐bearing clay formation resulted in water inflow and subsequent swelling, triggering ground heave and damage to more than 250 houses.

Many key ecosystem functions are affected by plant roots and their traits. However, understanding of the patterns in, and drivers of, root traits lags far behind equivalent knowledge of above‐ground tissues, particularly in boreal old growth forests. We surveyed community‐level root traits across 11 old growth forests spanning a wide latitudinal range ...

Evolution of low-karstified rock-blocks and their influence on reservoir leakage: a modelling perspective [PDF]
Hydraulic structures such as dams and reservoirs pose significant construction challenges in karst areas due to severe and costly leakage issues. In this study, we apply a numerical model to test the hypothesis that karst aquifers in water divide areas ...

We evaluated single‐ and multi‐sensor UAV approaches for classifying tree species and standing dead trees in boreal forests, focusing on key biodiversity indicators such as European aspen. Using spectral and structural features extracted from RGB, multispectral (MSP), and LiDAR point clouds for 1,205 field‐measured trees, we compared classification ...

This study demonstrates that not just Airborne Laser Scanning, but also Sentinel‐2 can effectively estimate absolute canopy cover and canopy cover heterogeneity ‐ structural metrics that determine the subcanopy light regime, found to be linked to the vascular plant species richness in the understory of temperate mountain forests.
