Boron‐Doping of a Macrocyclic Tetrafuran Framework Unveils an Expanded Porphyrinoid With Switchable (Anti)Aromaticity and Conformational Dynamics

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We disclose a novel boron macrocycle derived from the sustainable furan building block. The boraporphyrinoid exhibits a global antiaromatic ring current and dynamic conformational flexibility. Twofold reduction induces a switch to strong global aromaticity, accompanied by stiffening of the porphyrinoid backbone.

On the number of Kekulé structures of fluoranthene congeners [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Serbian Chemical Society, 2010
The Kekulé structure count K of fluoranthene congeners is studied. It is shown that for such polycyclic conjugated π-electron systems, either K = 0 or K ≥ 3.

Tuning the pseudospin polarization of graphene by a pseudo-magnetic field [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
One of the intriguing characteristics of honeycomb lattices is the appearance of a pseudo-magnetic field as a result of mechanical deformation. In the case of graphene, the Landau quantization resulting from this pseudo-magnetic field has been measured ...

Role of Kekul\'e and Non-Kekul\'e Structures in the Radical Character of Alternant Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A TAO-DFT Study

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate the role of Kekule and non-Kekule structures in the radical character of alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT), an efficient electronic structure method ...

Observation of nonlinear disclination states

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2023
Introduction of controllable deformations into periodic materials that lead to disclinations in their structure opens novel routes for construction of higher-order topological insulators hosting topological states at disclinations.

Proximity Enhanced Quantum Spin Hall State in Graphene

open access: yes, 2015
Graphene is the first model system of two-dimensional topological insulator (TI), also known as quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. The QSH effect in graphene, however, has eluded direct experimental detection because of its extremely small energy gap due

Multifunctional sequence-defined macromolecules for chemical data storage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Sequence-defined macromolecules consist of a defined chain length (single mass), end-groups, composition and topology and prove promising in application fields such as anti-counterfeiting, biological mimicking and data storage. Here we show the potential

Interaction driven phases in the half-filled honeycomb lattice: an infinite density matrix renormalization group study

open access: yes, 2015
The emergence of the Haldane Chern insulator state due to strong short range repulsive interactions in the half-filled fermionic spinless honeycomb lattice model has been proposed and challenged with different methods and yet it still remains ...

Phases and phase transitions of a perturbed Kekul\'e-Kitaev model

open access: yes, 2015
We study the quantum spin liquid phase in a variant of the Kitaev model where the bonds of the honeycomb lattice are distributed in a Kekul\'e pattern. The system supports gapped and gapless Z_2 quantum spin liquids with interesting differences from the ...

Emergence of Meron Kekulé lattices in twisted Néel antiferromagnets

open access: yesnpj Quantum Materials
A Kekulé lattice is an exotic, distorted lattice structure exhibiting alternating bond lengths, distinguished from naturally formed atomic crystals.
