Electromagnetic Scattering from Two-Dimensional Dielectric Rough Sea Surfaces with Ship-Induced Kelvin Wake

IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Electromagnetic scattering from rough sea surfaces with a ship-induced Kelvin wake is investigated by utilizing the polarimetirc scattering model of second-order small-slope approximation with tapered wave incidence. The emphasis is on the examination of

Application of periodic structure scattering in Kelvin ship wakes detection

Sustainable Cities and Society, 2019
Abstract The traditional research on SAR imaging mechanism for ship wake mostly takes the wake as a whole for electromagnetic scattering simulation analysis. However, this method cannot obtain the scattering characteristics of wake structure effectively.

Polarimetric characters extraction research of Kelvin wakes on PolSAR image

2011 International Conference on Remote Sensing, Environment and Transportation Engineering, 2011
In this paper, based on the difference of scattering mechanism between Kelvin wakes and sea clutter in SAR images, with multiband and full polarization, the polarimetric characters of the Kelvin wakes are extracted and studied in order to detection or identification for the wakes.

Numerical simulation of wide-area Kelvin's ship wake based on high-order spectral method

The Physics of Fluids
The surface wake generated by a vessel sailing on the water surface can persist for kilometers and may disclose navigation parameters. Conventional viscous flow models entail high computational costs for large-scale wake simulation, while potential flow ...

Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Kelvin Wake Image Artifact

SPIE Proceedings, 1989
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images of ship wakes have, under calm wind conditions, contained a "narrow vee" artifact of included angle small relative to that of the Kelvin wake envelope. Identified here is a physical source for some of these image artifacts- namely the divergent part of the Kelvin wake system.

Kelvin Wakes and Wave Resistance of Cruiser-and Transom-Stern Ships

Journal of Ship Research, 1994
The steady wave patterns, Kelvin-wake spectra and wave resistance of several realistic ship hulls are computed by a Rankine panel method. Wall-sided as well as transom-stern ships are studied over a broad range of Froude numbers and the importance of enforcing a Kutta-type condition of smooth flow detachment at the transom stern is demonstrated.

On the radar imaging mechanism of Kelvin arms of ship wakes

IGARSS '98. Sensing and Managing the Environment. 1998 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing. Symposium Proceedings. (Cat. No.98CH36174), 1998
The radar signatures of Kelvin arms of the wave pattern generated by a moving ship are studied by using an improved composite surface model for the calculation of the radar backscatter from the ocean surface. The modulation of the normalized radar backscattering cross section (NRCS) by the cusp waves forming the Kelvin arms is calculated as function of

Simulation of Kelvin wakes in optical images of rough sea surface

Applied Ocean Research, 2019
Abstract Kelvin wake is one of the common wakes generated by moving ships and contains rich information about ships. In this paper, free wave elevations of Kelvin wake are calculated based on the Michell thin ship theory combined with a point source perturbation model.

Simulation of along-track interferometric synthetic aperture radar images of Kelvin wakes

2009 2nd Asian-Pacific Conference on Synthetic Aperture Radar, 2009
The phase information in along-track interferometric synthetic aperture radar (ATI-SAR) is sensitive to the radial velocity component of the scatters. Surface velocity field induced by Kelvin wake make it visible in ATI-SAR phase images. Simulations of ATI phase images based on M4S model were preformed in this study using the velocity field in Kelvin ...
