This poster describes a potential problem with a relatively well used measure in Information Retrieval research: Kendall's Tau rank correlation coefficient. The coefficient is best known for its use in determining the similarity of test collections when ranking sets of retrieval runs. Threshold values for the coefficient have been defined and used in a

We introduce two local versions of Kendall’s tau conditioning on one or two random variable(s) varying less than a fixed distance. Some basic properties are proved. These local Kendall’s taus are computed for some shuffles of Min and the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern copulas and shown to distinguish between complete dependence and independence copulas.

Kendall's tau for serial dependence
Canadian Journal of Statistics, 2000AbstractThe authors show how Kendall's tau can be adapted to test against serial dependence in a univariate time series context. They provide formulas for the mean and variance of circular and noncircular versions of this statistic, and they prove its asymptotic normality under the hypothesis of independence.

Confidence intervals for Kendall's tau
British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, 1997A simulation study was conducted to examine the performance of several confidence intervals (CIs) for Kendall's tau ( t xy ) under a variety of population conditions. Two normal population variables ( N = 10,000) were transformed to ...

Kendall's Tau with a Blocking Variable
Biometrics, 1984Kendall's rank correlation tau between two variables, in the presence of a third blocking variable, is defined. An estimator of the common tau within the blocks is used to test conditional independence of the two variables, given the blocking variable. An application is presented.

Spearman‐like computation of Kendall's tau
British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, 1977Two new methods for calculating Kendall's tau from rank differences are shown to be valid if neither or one of the rankings contains tied ranks, but not if both do.
