The keratinizing odontogenic cyst was first described as a distinct entity by Shear’ in 1960. Philipson2 originally applied the name “odontogenic keratocyst” to this entity, which has been reported to account for 7 to 8% of all odontogenic cysts.3 In 1972, Donoff et al4 reported 16 keratocysts found in a series of 342 cysts of the jaws (Table 1 ...

The clinical and histological data of 106 keratocysts from the files of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Nijmegen and Arnhem, The Netherlands, formed the basis of this study. There was a wide age range with a male predominance and with the mandibular third molar area and ramus being the most common sites involved.

Odontogenic keratocyst in an infant' [PDF]
Odontogenic keratocysts occur as solitary lesions or in association with the basal cell naevus syndrome (BCNS), and have been documented in the age range 5 to 83 years. A rare case of an odontogenic keratocyst in a one-year-old girl is presented. Its characteristic tendency to recur, and its association with BCNS present important clinical implications.

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1994The gingival cyst of the adult exhibits an epithelial lining that is essentially the same as the lateral periodontal cyst. Although the gingival cyst of the adult exhibits some morphologic variability, its lining is generally considered to be nonkeratinized.

Peripheral Odontogenic Keratocyst
Journal of Periodontology, 2005Background: An odontogenic keratocyst can develop at virtually any site in the jaws and is of concern because of its aggressive clinical behavior. It represents 3% to 12% of all odontogenic cysts. This paper describes the rare peripheral presentation of an odontogenic keratocyst localized to the maxillary anterior gingiva and its differential diagnosis.
