Cushites, Colchians, and Khazars

Journal of Near Eastern Studies, 1959
T HEN Herodotus visited Colchis (Mingrelia) in the fifth century B.c.,1 he found its people to be, as he described them, black-skinned and woolly-haired--that is, seemingly, of Negro type. They were, he says, circumcised. "The Colchians, the Egyptians, and the Ethiopians," he remarks, "are the only races which from ancient times have practised ...

A New Book on the Khazars

Oriens, 1958
fact the last discovery in this field seems to be that of the so-called "Cambridge document" found by Dr. Schechter in I912. The book, however, gives a very careful and critical survey of the existing literature and contains a useful outline of the problems connected with the history of the still mysterious people. The addition of "Jewish" to the title

The Khazars

The Khazar Qaghanate, the largest polity of Western Central Eurasia-Eastern Europe of its time (c. mid-7th century–965/968–969), was a nomadic state, a quasi-imperial xenocracy, rather than an “imperial confederacy” or “super-complex chieftaincy.” It was the hegemonic power over twenty-five to forty subject peoples.
