It now seems that significant progress can be achieved only if some lengthy bilingual inscription in the Khazar language can be discovered, or perhaps a new Khazar ...

The Khazar Qaghanate, the largest polity of Western Central Eurasia-Eastern Europe of its time (c. mid-7th century–965/968–969), was a nomadic state, a quasi-imperial xenocracy, rather than an “imperial confederacy” or “super-complex chieftaincy.” It was the hegemonic power over twenty-five to forty subject peoples.

Khazar studies: Achievements and perspectives
2007The Khazar Qaganate was, indeed, one of the great powers of the age. It played an important role in Rus' history, in early Hungarian history and the history of the Caucasus. This chapter presents some idea as to what Khazarology has accomplished thus far and to perhaps suggest some future directions.
