Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

NEPHROTOXICITY OF CYCLOSPORIN A IN LIVER AND KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PATIENTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
In six of twelve orthotopic liver recipients nephrotoxicity was noted after 13-22 days of treatment with 16·3±2·9 (SEM) mg/kg per day of cyclosporin A (CyA). With a decrease in the daily CyA dose to 9·2±2·3 (SEM) mg/kg kidney function returned to normal.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Objectively measured physical activity and kidney function in older men; a cross-sectional population-based study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: kidney function declines in older adults and physical activity levels are low. We investigated whether higher levels of physical activity and lower levels of sedentary behaviour were associated with lower odds of low kidney function in older ...

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

Investigating the Relationship of Anthropometric Indices with Kidney Function and Serum Levels of Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Matrix Gamma Carboxyglutamate Protein in Kidney Transplant Patients

open access: yesArmaghane Danesh Bimonthly Journal, 2022
Background & aim: Considering that overweight and obesity in transplant patients are considered as a risk factor for the occurrence of metabolic disorders, heart diseases and reduced kidney function, therefore, the purpose of the present study was to ...

Calcium‐sensing receptor induces the apoptosis of chondrocytes in cooperation with phosphate transporter

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Excess Ca2+ ions activate the Calcium‐Sensing Receptor (CaSR), which subsequently drives the uptake of excess inorganic phosphate (Pi) via the Pi transporter (Pit−1) in chondrocytes. This mechanism causes a toxic increase in intracellular Pi concentration, ultimately leading to chondrocyte apoptosis and pathological mineralization. Excess extracellular

ATP13A2 is involved in intracellular polyamine transport in lung epithelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Spermidine transport in lung epithelial cells involves the polyamine transporter ATP13A2. Cell proliferation is associated with the upregulation of ATP13A2. Polyamines are present in all living cells and are implicated in various crucial cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis and autophagy.

Impact of creatinine clearance on helicobacter pylori eradication rate in patients with peptic ulcer disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Introduction. Gastrointestinal complaints are common in patients with kidney failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of creatinine clearance on Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication rate in patients with peptic ulcer disease ...
