SUMMARYA case of spontaneous rupture of the kidney pelvis due to a large benign papilloma is presented. A search of the literature revealed no report of a similar case. Certain features of the symptoms and signs are discussed, especially the significance of tenderness posteriorly on rectal examination.

Examination of the renal pelvis of late fetal and neonatal kidneys shows that in about one quarter of the calyces examined the arrangement is similat to that in the rat, the outer medulla being separated from the calyceal cavity by a very thin epithelium.
