Kogia Records in Brazilian Equatorial and Southwestern Atlantic Oceans
ABSTRACT The pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf (Kogia sima) sperm whales are cryptic cetaceans characterized by inconspicuous surfacing behavior, small group sizes, and deep‐diving habits, making visual detection particularly challenging. Here, we present the first broad‐scale passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) assessment of Kogia spp.

ABSTRACT Biphonation—the simultaneous production of two independent fundamental frequencies within a single vocalization—is a prominent feature of killer whale calls, yet the factors influencing the presence and intensity of heterodyne frequencies, which arise from interactions between these fundamentals, remain poorly understood. We analyzed long‐term

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were examined as a function of depth in killer whale (Orcinus orca) blubber samples.

ABSTRACT Most dolphin species produce broadband biosonar clicks for echolocating prey, and whistles and burst‐pulsed calls for communication purposes. Seven dolphin species were previously reported to only produce clicks of a narrowband high‐frequency (NBHF) type, very similar to the clicks produced by porpoises.

Using Aerial Photogrammetry to Estimate Body Condition and Assess Sexual Dimorphism in Narwhals
ABSTRACT The Arctic is warming rapidly, impacting ice‐dependent species and communities that rely on them for resources. Body condition indices (BCI) are widely used to assess individual health within populations. We adapted the methodology to improve accessibility for estimating narwhal body condition from drone footage, using body length, body width,

ABSTRACT The waters surrounding the southern Iberian Peninsula are a key conservation area for the long‐finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas melas), particularly in the pelagic regions of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea, and the Gulf of Vera, where upwelling, complex bathymetry and frontal dynamics enhance productivity and prey availability,

ABSTRACT The abundance of cetaceans in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) is estimated using spatial/temporal density modeling and conventional line‐transect approaches. Line‐transect data are analyzed from 10 ship‐based visual sighting surveys from 1986 to 2006 that include 281,000 km of survey effort in a 19.4 million km2 study area.
