Adopted daughters and adopted daughters-in-law in Taiwan: a mortality analysis [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Adoption is sometimes considered paradoxical from an evolutionary perspective because the costs spent supporting an adopted child would be better spent on rearing one's own.

Mutually beneficial host exploitation and ultra-biased sex ratios in quasisocial parasitoids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Selfish interests usually preclude resource sharing, but under some conditions collective actions enhance per capita gains. Such Allee effects underlay early explanations of social evolution but current understanding focusses on kin selection (inclusive ...

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

TMC4 localizes to multiple taste cell types in the mouse taste papillae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Transmembrane channel‐like 4 (TMC4), a voltage‐dependent chloride channel, plays a critical role in amiloride‐insensitive salty taste transduction. TMC4 is broadly expressed in all mature taste cell types, suggesting a possible involvement of multiple cell types in this pathway.

Natural selection. IV. The Price equation

open access: yes, 2012
The Price equation partitions total evolutionary change into two components. The first component provides an abstract expression of natural selection. The second component subsumes all other evolutionary processes, including changes during transmission ...

Joint evolution of altruistic cooperation and dispersal in a metapopulation of small local populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We investigate the joint evolution of public goods cooperation and dispersal in a metapopulation model with small local populations. Altruistic cooperation can evolve due to assortment and kin selection, and dispersal can evolve because of demographic ...

Dorsolateral Cervical Cord T2 Hyperintensity in KIF1C‐Related Disease (Spastic Paraplegia 58): Two Long‐Duration Cases

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pathogenic variants in KIF1C cause Spastic Paraplegia 58 (SPG58), typically presenting with cerebellar ataxia and spastic paraparesis. We report two unrelated patients with spastic paraparesis, cerebellar ataxia, and tremor. Whole‐exome sequence analysis identified novel homozygous variants in the motor domain of KIF1C (NM_006612.6): c.921G>A (

Exploring Dipolar Dynamics and Ionic Transport in Metal‐Organic Frameworks: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the interplay of dipolar dynamics and ionic charge transport in MOF compounds is investigated. Synthesizing the novel structure CFA‐25 with integrated freely rotating dipolar groups, local and macroscopic effects, including interactions with Cs cations are explored.

Joint evolution of kin recognition and cooperation in spatially structured rhizobium populations.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
In the face of costs, cooperative interactions maintained over evolutionary time present a central question in biology. What forces maintain this cooperation? Two potential ways to explain this problem are spatially structured environments (kin selection)

Nonmarket Cooperation in the Indigenous Food Economy of Taimyr, Arctic Russia: Evidence for Control and Benefit [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Empirical data on food sharing in native Dolgan, Nganasan, and Nenets communities in Siberia provide evidence for hunter control over big game and fish, as well as likely benefits of inter-household sharing.
