Lateral Instability 13 Years After Kinematically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty

open access: yesArthroplasty Today
To reduce unsatisfied patients following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), kinematic alignment has been introduced as an alternative to mechanical alignment.

Microstructural Evolution and Vacancy Defect Formation in Mn–Mo–Ni RPV Steel Under Low Cycle Fatigue: Insights From EBSD and PALS

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐cycle fatigue damage in Mn–Mo–Ni reactor pressure vessel steel is examined using a combined electron backscatter diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy approach. The study correlates texture evolution, dislocation substructure development, and vacancy‐type defect formation across uniform, necked, and fracture regions, providing

Increased varus deformity requires greater personalisation of alignment: A finite element biomechanical study

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose This finite element study aims to compare the biomechanical performance of three total knee arthroplasty (TKA) alignment strategies—mechanical alignment, kinematic alignment and inverse kinematic alignment—in knees with different degrees of varus

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Kinematic coupling between the foot and lower limb during gait [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
INTRODUCTION: Abnormal kinematic coupling between the foot and lower limb has been associated with chronic overuse injuries of the lower extremity during running. However, the normal coupling relationship between the two segments remains unclear. The

Influence of physical capacities of males with transtibial amputation on gait adjustments on sloped surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The aim of the study was to investigate how kinematic and kinetic adjustments between level and slope locomotion of persons with transtibial amputation are related to their individual muscular and functional capacities.

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Phenotypes of the Knee and Limb: Rationale for Transitioning Toward Personalized Alignment in Total Knee Arthroplasty

open access: yes, 2022
For a long time, the alignment goal for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was a neutrally aligned limb with orthogonal joint lines to the mechanical axes (mechanical alignment).

A prospective randomised control trial comparing functional with mechanical axis alignment in total knee arthroplasty: study protocol for an investigator initiated trial

open access: yesTrials, 2021
Background A drive to improve functional outcomes for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has led to alternative alignment being used. Functional alignment (FA) uses intraoperative soft tissue tension to determine the optimal position of ...

The Influence of Kinematic Alignment on Patellofemoral Joint Biomechanics in Total Knee Arthroplasty. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Clin Med
Background: Anterior knee pain is a prevalent issue post total knee arthroplasty, often necessitating revision surgery. Various factors contribute to this complication, including patellar maltracking and excessive patellofemoral load. Kinematic alignment
