The Low Oxidation State Paradigm is More Consistent with XFEL Observations of the S₃ → [S₄] → S₀ Transition in Photosystem II

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the LOS paradigm reproduce key XFEL observations of the S₃ → [S₄] → S₀ transition in PSII. In contrast to the HOS model, the LOS framework explains both the disappearance of Ox during O–O bond formation and the unchanged Mn4–O5 distance in the peroxide intermediate.
