The avifauna of the Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetland Islands

Abstract The article represents a survey of the avifauna of the Fildes Peninsula, concentrating on the dates and length of the reproductive cycle and based on field observations during the 26th Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1981–1982. A total of 12 species was found to be nesting, while a further six species have been recorded as visitors.

As a rule, the following sequence of phosphate minerals was found in ornithogenic soils around penguin rookeries: struvite and hydroxylapatite in the surface guano layer, leucophosphite in the upper part, of the phosphatized rock zone, with minyulite in the central part, and amorphous aluminium phosphate and taranakite in the deepest part.

The species composition of the ichthyofauna of Admiralty Bay, King George Island was determined from results of sampling using bottom trawls, gill-nets and long-lines.
