Eocene fossil feather from King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

open access: yesAntarctic Science, 2013
AbstractThe first fossil avian feather from Antarctica is reported here, from the early to middle Eocene Fossil Hill Formation at Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. Characteristics such as its form, asymmetry of vanes, closed-pennaceous vanes with barbules and a deep ventral groove indicate that the feather was used for flight.

BVLOS UAV missions for vegetation mapping in maritime Antarctic

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2023
Polar areas are among the regions where climate change occurs faster than on most of the other areas on Earth. To study the effects of climate change on vegetation, there is a need for knowledge on its current status and properties.

Occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2017
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi make up an important ecological niche in ecosystems, and knowledge of their diversity in extreme environments is still incipient. The objective of this work was to evaluate the density and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the soil of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, Antarctica.

Lithium Isotope Geochemistry in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Lithium (Li) has two stable isotopes, 6Li and 7Li, whose large relative mass difference is responsible for significant isotopic fractionation during physico-chemical processes, allowing Li isotopes to be a good tracer of continental chemical weathering ...
