Applications of Kluyveromyces marxianus in Biotechnology
2017Kluyveromyces marxianus is a member of the Saccharomycetales yeast order and is used for a variety of commercial applications, most notably production of ethanol from food waste streams. Traits such as rapid growth rates, lactose utilization, good tolerance to inhibitory molecules and thermotolerance facilitate these applications. K.

Iminodiacetate and Nitrilotriacetate Degradation by Kluyveromyces marxianus IMB3
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2002The thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus IMB3 was capable of utilising either iminodiacetate or nitrilotriacetate as a sole source of nitrogen for growth. Cell extracts contained iminodiacetate dehydrogenase and nitrilotriacetate monooxygenase activities, suggesting the presence in the yeast of orthologues of these bacterial enzymes.

Kluyveromyces marxianus as a host for heterologous protein synthesis
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2016The preferentially respiring and thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus is an emerging host for heterologous protein synthesis, surpassing the traditional preferentially fermenting yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in some important aspects: K . marxianus can grow at temperatures 10 °C higher than S.

Kluyveromyces marxianus: a potential source of diacetyl reductase
World Journal of Microbiology & Biotechnology, 1994Kluyveromyces marxianus had a higher specific activity of diacetyl reductase (EC 1.1.1.5) than all other organisms previously reported. The enzyme was NADH-dependent and irreversibly catalysed the conversion of diacetyl to acetoin with an optimum pH of 7.0. It was stable at 40°C but lost 50% of its activity at 50°C in 30 min.

Characterizing yeast promoters used in Kluyveromyces marxianus
World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2015Fermentation at higher temperatures can potentially reduce the cooling cost in large-scale fermentation and reduce the contamination risk. Thus, the thermotolerant yeast, Kluyveromyces marxianus, which can grow and ferment at elevated temperatures, is a promising biotechnological tool for future applications. However, the promoters used in K. marxianus

Interfertility as basis for the delimitation of Kluyveromyces marxianus
Archives of Microbiology, 1978Hybridization studies between strains of Kluyveromyces marxianus and the remaining species of the genus involving the use of auxotrophic mutants, are reported. K. marxianus was found to be interfertile with K. bulgaricus, K. cicerisporus, K. dobzhanskii, K. drosophilarum, K. fragilis, K. lactis, K. phaseolosporus, K. vanudenii and K. wikenii. Accepting

Purification and characterization of a lysine aminopeptidase fromKluyveromyces marxianus
FEMS Microbiology Letters, 2004A lysine aminopeptidase was purified from the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus. This enzyme was purified 100-fold from a soluble extract obtained at 100,000g. The purification procedure consisted in fractionated precipitation with ammonium sulfate and five chromatography steps.

D-Xylose Transport by Candida succiphila and Kluyveromyces marxianus
Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2003The kinetics and regulation of D-xylose uptake were investigated in the efficient pentose fermentor Candida succiphila, and in Kluyveromyces marxianus, which assimilate but do not ferment pentose sugars. Active high affinity (Km approximately 3.8 mM; Vmax approximately 15 nmol/[mg min]) and putative facilitated diffusion low-affinity (Km approximately ...

CHARACTERIZATION OF AN 'ENDOPOLYGALACTURONASE' OF THE YEAST KLUYVEROMYCES MARXIANUS
Journal of Food Biochemistry, 1983Analytic isoelectric focusing showed that the ‘endopolygalacturonase’ from Kluyveromyces marxianus consists of 21 multiple enzyme components. Neither changes in cultivation conditions, enzyme substrate or reaction conditions resulted in any quantitative or qualitative differences in the enzyme patterns.

Evaluation of Kluyveromyces marxianus as baker's yeast
Food Research International, 1995Abstract Two strains of Kluyveromyces marxianus (NRRL-Y-2415 and NRRL-Y-1109) were assessed as baker's yeasts comparing them with two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated respectively from compressed yeast and active dry yeast. Strains were tested for dough proofing activity in lean dough and rich doughs (prepared with sucrose, lactose or
