Arthrodesis of the knee is a simple and safe operation that ensures stability and freedom from pain. But it is achieved at the expense of movement and occasionally of social acceptability. If arthroplasty is to be recommended, the advantages of arthrodesis must be retained, with the added bonus of a functional arc of movement.

The results of fifty-one Manchester knee arthroplasties in forty-one patients are reviewed and discussed. Excellent and good results were obtained in 85.4 per cent of arthroplasties. Varus and valgus deformity can be corrected and stability preserved or restored. Complications occurred in only twelve patients but resolved in all except one.

Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1984This is a review of the results of 17 knees treated by modular-type (Marmor) unicompartmental knee prostheses. The average age at the time of the operation was 62 years with an average follow-up period of 59 months. All the patients improved and were satisfied with the operation.

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1989Knee arthroplasty is a suitable way of treating severely affected joints. During the years 1976-1987, 160 knee arthroplasties were performed at the author's institution. Of 142 followed. 41 cases were of the unconstrained type (Marmor, Bechtol, and Oxford), while 101 cases were of the constrained type (St. Georg hinge and Endo-Model).
