The knee is a synovial knee joint that allows flexion, extension and also a slight ability to rotate medially and laterally, being able to move on two planes, being known as a modified hinge joint. The main features of a synovial joint are the articulating cartilage, the joint capsule, the joint cavity, the bursae and the ligaments.

Due to the absence of a unique center of rotation, the knee requires more complex geometry in its prosthetic replacement. The relative motions of the components are a combination of rolling and sliding, so causing a much more complex wear, whose debris remain trapped between articulating surfaces, producing three-body wear.

Knee Joint Sonoanatomy and Ultrasound-Guided Knee Joint Injection
2021The knee joint is amongst the most commonly injured joints in the human body, and ultrasound has played an increasingly important role in accurate diagnoses of various structural pathologies. Given the generally superficial location of the knee, a high frequency linear probe is frequently used to identify various knee abnormalities, such as medial or ...

Knee Joint Replacement Using Shiers Knee Hinge
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1974In twenty-four arthroplasties of the knee in twenty patients the Shiers knee-hinge prosthesis was used. These patients were followed for an average of thirty-three months after operation. Five patients who had been totally confined to a wheelchair prior to surgery were able to walk postoperatively, and ambulation improved in all patients.

Appropriate history taking and examination can ensure accurate diagnosis of common knee problems, and rapid and effective interventions or referral to orthopaedic specialists. This article describes the anatomy of the knee joint and discusses relevant history taking, the examination process, special tests and radiology, as well as common knee injuries ...

This chapter will discuss the knee, the largest synovial joint in the body. It will cover the normal bony anatomy and geometry of the knee and how this gives rise to its complex biomechanics which go beyond a simple hinge. The factors stabilising the knee during its motion will be discussed and how these stabilisers have both primary and secondary ...
