Knotting fingerprints resolve knot complexity and knotting pathways in ideal knots
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2015We use disk matrices to define knotting fingerprints that provide fine-grained insights into the local knotting structure of ideal knots. These knots have been found to have spatial properties that highly correlate with those of interesting macromolecules. From this fine structure and an analysis of the associated planar graph, one can define a measure

Embedding Knots in Trivial Knots
Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, 1982The authors show that every knot can be embedded in codimension two in a trivial knot, and they derive corresponding theorems about embedding branched coverings in codimension two. These results (and generalizations) were obtained previously by the reviewer and by W. D. Neumann [Topology 16 (1977), no. 4, 369–393.

The ileosigmoid knot (ISK) is a variant of midgut volvulus in which a loop of ileum wraps around the base of an elongated sigmoid colon and passes beneath itself forming a knot. A long small bowel mesentery and a sigmoid colon on a narrow pedicle are necessary prerequisites, but the wide variation in incidence of ISK across the world seems to be ...

To study the presentation, management, and outcome of patients with ileosigmoid knotting admitted to a district general hospital in an area of relatively high incidence.A retrospective study of 15 patients treated for ileosigmoid knotting at Holy Family Hospital, Berekum, Ghana, during the period 1984 to 1990 inclusive. The overall mortality was 47 ...

A 30-year-old black man had emergency surgery for an acute abdominal condition. Intraoperative diagnosis of an ileosigmoid knot was made and gangrenous bowel was resected, with ilioileostomy, reanastomosis, end colostomy, and Hartmann pouch.

A method for representing knots by means of a chain code is presented. Knots which are digitalized and represented by the orthogonal direction change chain code are called discrete knots. Discrete knots are composed of constant straight-line segments using only orthogonal directions. The chain elements represent the orthogonal direction changes of the

AbstractIntestinal obstruction is a common cause of emergency surgical admission. The most frequent causes are well known and may often be safely treated conservatively in the first instance. The rarer causes of intestinal obstruction require prompt diagnosis and surgery if they are not to progress rapidly to strangulation and gangrene.
