Integrating eDNA and Visual Surveys With Ocean Drift Models to Monitor Marine Mammals in Tropical Waters

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 5, September–October 2025.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding for monitoring marine mammals in tropical waters around Réunion Island. By combining visual surveys with eDNA sampling and reverse particle drift modeling, we show that eDNA captures local cetacean presence and offers additional spatial insight when integrated with ...

Stranding of a Pygmy Sperm Whale, Kogia breviceps, in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada

open access: yes, 2004
A Pygmy Sperm Whale, Kogia breviceps, stranded alive and later died in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Canada on 28 August 2001. This is the northern-most stranding of this species in the western Atlantic.

Records of kogiid whales in Namibia, including the first record of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Dwarf (Kogia sima) and pygmy (K. breviceps) sperm whales occur in pelagic waters around southern Africa. Here we report the first record of K. sima from Namibia and provide information on the basic morphometrics and diet of that record and of two ...

Sexing From Seawater: Application of Environmental DNA Beyond Species Detection for Cetaceans

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) flukeprint sampling and ZFX/ZFY gene amplification to determine the sex of killer whales and humpback whales, finding higher PCR success in killer whales but higher sex‐matching success in humpbacks. While eDNA shows promise as a noninvasive alternative to biopsies, further refinement is needed to optimize ...

A new species of Isocyamus (Amphipoda: Cyamidae) from Kogia breviceps (De Blainville, 1838) in Australian waters

open access: yes, 1992
Isocyamus kogiae n. sp. is described from a pygmy sperm whale Kogia breviceps (De Blainville, 1838) stranded on Moreton Island, Queensland, Australia.

Serological Evidence of Cetacean Morbillivirus Infection in Common Bottlenose Dolphins in Japan

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, Volume 69, Issue 5, Page 307-312, May 2025.
ABSTRACT This study revealed that 41.9% of wild‐born Japanese captive dolphins (18 out of 43 dolphins) have neutralizing antibodies specific to cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV). This finding indicates a widespread yet undetected CeMV infection among wild dolphins in the waters around Japan, occurring without notable epidemic or mass mortality of dolphins.

Utilization of stable isotopes in teeth to investigate pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) in the southeastern United States

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 41, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract The pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) is currently the second‐most stranded cetacean in the southeastern United States (SEUS), but information concerning their population structure is severely limited. This study used stable isotope analysis to investigate the isotopic niches and population structure of K.

Evidence of marine predation on silver New Zealand longfin eels, Anguilla dieffenbachii

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 31, Issue 4, August 2024.
Abstract The use of Pop‐up Satellite Archival Tags (PSATs) has provided considerable new information about the behaviour of migrating (silver) eels (Anguilla spp.) at sea, with 9 of 19 recognised species or subspecies tagged to date. However, such studies often reported premature tag detachment and relatively high rates of predation.

Anisakid nematodes from stranded pygmy sperm whales, Kogia breviceps (Kogiidae), in three localities of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

open access: yes, 2006
The present paper reports the presence of 3 adult and juvenile anisakid nematode species: Anisakis simplex, A. brevispiculata, and Pseudoterranova ceticola, which were recovered from the digestive tract of stranded pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps ...
