An experimental test of endfire synthetic aperture sonar for sediment characterisation

open access: yesIET Radar, Sonar & Navigation
The validation of seafloor scattering models used for seabed characterisation requires quantifying the contributions from the sediment interface and volume to the total acoustic returns.

The witching week of herding on bitcoin exchanges

open access: yesFinancial Innovation, 2022
This paper analyses the herding behaviour among exchanges around the expiration of bitcoin futures traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The database extends from December 2017 to October 2020, taking as a reference the main exchanges that ...

A two-strain model of infectious disease spread with asymmetric temporary immunity periods and partial cross-immunity

open access: yesMathematical Biosciences and Engineering, 2023
We introduce a two-strain model with asymmetric temporary immunity periods and partial cross-immunity. We derive explicit conditions for competitive exclusion and coexistence of the strains depending on the strain-specific basic reproduction numbers ...

Children's drawings as an interpretive response to a gamified narrative with augmented reality: the case of Towards the South Pole

open access: yesLiteracy, EarlyView.
Abstract Drawing is an ideal technique to understand children's responses to fictional narratives, including digital ones. In this case, a gamified narrative with augmented reality (AR), based on a picturebook, was designed and used in an intervention in 8 Early Childhood Education classrooms (N = 113), aimed at enhancing their literary competence ...

Identification of individual root-knot nematodes using low coverage long-read sequencing.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Root-knot nematodes (RKN; genus Meloidogyne) are polyphagous plant pathogens of great economic importance to agriculturalists globally. These species are small, diverse, and can be challenging for accurate taxonomic identification.

Urban political ecologies of sewage surveillance: Creating vital and valuable public health data from wastewater

open access: yesTransactions of the Institute of British Geographers, EarlyView.
Abstract With the outbreak of COVID‐19, wastewater surveillance for public health rapidly emerged and expanded globally. In this article we chart the variegated ecosystem of private firms that work closely with public and non‐profit entities to transform metabolic flows of sewage into vital and valuable bioinformation, thereby creating new multi ...

Previous short‐term disuse dictates muscle gene expression and physiological adaptations to subsequent resistance exercise

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Eleven young healthy males underwent 10 days of unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) followed by a 21 day period of active recovery (AR) using resistance exercise performed three times a week at 70% of the one repetition maximum (1RM), equating to a total of nine training sessions.

Time‐restricted feeding mitigates Alzheimer's disease‐associated cognitive impairments via a B. pseudolongum‐propionic acid‐FFAR3 axis

open access: yesiMeta, Volume 4, Issue 2, April 2025.
A 4‐month of time‐restricted feeding (TRF) intervention alleviated cognitive impairments in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, while a 3‐month TRF regimen improved spatial memory, reduced amyloid‐beta accumulation, and promoted microglial aggregation around plaques in AD mice. Antibiotic‐induced gut microbiota depletion partly abolished TRF's benefits.

Teknonaturalist: A Snakemake Pipeline for Assessing Fungal Diversity From Plant Genome Bycatch

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 3, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Relatively little is known of the host associations and compatibility of fungal plant pathogens and endophytes. Publicly available plant genomic DNA can be mined to detect incidental fungal DNA, but taxonomic assignment can be challenging due to short lengths and variable discriminative power among different genomic regions and taxa.

Metagenomic Exploration Uncovers Several Novel ‘Candidatus’ Species Involved in Acetate Metabolism in High‐Ammonia Thermophilic Biogas Processes

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 18, Issue 3, March 2025.
Metagenomic analysis of three thermophilic species was performed to identify key species for stable biogas production at high free ammonia levels (> 0.7 g/L). Potential acetogens and syntrophic acetate‐oxidising bacteria (SAOB) were recovered by looking for genes of the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway and glycine synthase reductase pathway.
