Mechanistic Promiscuity in Cobalt‐Mediated CO2 Reduction Reaction: One‐ Versus Two‐Electron Reduction Process

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
The cobalt complexes [(Hbbpya)CoII]2⁺, and [(Mebbpya)CoII]2⁺ show contrasting CO₂ reduction behaviors. [(Hbbpya)CoII]2⁺ selectively forms CO via a fast, two‐electron pathway aided by a ‐NH proton relay, while [(Mebbpya)CoII]2⁺ favours hydrogen evolution due to a slower, competitive one‐electron mechanism.
