This chapter compares and contrasts the efforts by the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq, which has operated with more or less unfettered autonomy since 1991, and Rojava, the Kurdish entity that appeared in Syria during the civil war in 2011.

The conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state and military is lasting over 30 years. 1984, the Kurdish Workers Party PKK started the fight for an independent Kurdistan. Since that time, they in fact moved away from this radical position, but even the detention of their founder and leader Abdullah Öcalan brought temporary peace only.
