Short-term forecast of local tsunamis based on data containing seismic noise from deep-ocean stations closest to the sources [PDF]
Reliable short-term tsunami forecast on the Kuril Islands when earthquakes occur in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench is the most difficult. Forecasting by the traditional magnitude method often leads to false tsunami alarms. Based on the examples of the events

Age specific survival rates of Steller sea lions at rookeries with divergent population trends in the Russian Far East. [PDF]
After a dramatic population decline, Steller sea lions have begun to recover throughout most of their range. However, Steller sea lions in the Western Aleutians and Commander Islands are continuing to decline.

ABSTRACT Tsunami deposits serve as geological records of past events and are essential for understanding the occurrence and dynamics of tsunamis. However, conventional research has largely focused on sandy and boulder deposits, leaving gravel‐dominated tsunami deposits comparatively underexplored; furthermore, their characteristics and formation ...

Linking Interseismic Locking to Coseismic Rupture: The 2025 Mw 8.8 Kamchatka Earthquake
Abstract We investigate interseismic locking on the Kamchatka megathrust, source of the 2025 Mw 8.8 earthquake, using a data‐driven probabilistic framework. Horizontal GNSS velocities constrain a boundary element model on a triangulated megathrust geometry, while an algorithmic sampling strategy estimates the locking probability for fault elements ...

We use comparative genomic comparisons between species and subspecies in a north temperate fish to examine the relationship between inferred divergence time and extent of reproductive isolation. We found that similar divergence times were associated with dramatically distinct levels of reproductive isolation.

Tephrostratigraphic fieldwork on Iturup Island (the South Kuril Islands) in 2024 [PDF]
The report presents the results of the fieldwork (July 2024) aimed at studying the traces of prehistoric ashfalls in the city of Kurilsk and nearby settlements: the villages of Kitovy, Rybaki, and Reydovo (Iturup, South Kuril Islands).

New Terrestrial Native Iron Discovered on Earth's Surface
Abstract Native iron is a major common mineral in lunar samples and meteorites but rarely occurs on Earth's surface, as its stability requires highly reducing conditions with very low oxygen fugacity. To date, native iron has mainly been found in basalts, ophiolites, and deep hydrothermal systems.
