Growth, Development, and Nitrogen Uptake of Fodder Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) Crops Grown Under Differing Rates and Timing of Nitrogen Fertiliser in New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 2, April 2026.
Fodder beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is an important forage crop used for cattle wintering in New Zealand. Regional nitrogen (N) fertiliser experiments over two seasons (2016–2018) consisting of different N application rates (0–300 kg N/ha) and times of N application (sowing, canopy closure, and mid‐bulb development stage) were used to validate yield ...

Hydrogel Thermostat Inspired by Photoprotective Foliage Using Latent and Radiative Heat Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 17, 20 March 2026.
Guided by Populus alba foliage, this hydrogel latent‐radiative thermostat (LRT) actively balances latent and radiative heat fluxes. An LRT switches solar reflectance, maintains high mid‐IR emissivity, and reversibly evaporates/regenerates water, while titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles toughen the film.

Genetic diversity in taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) accessions using agro‐morphological traits and DArT SNP

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 9, Issue 1, March 2026.
Abstract Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is one of the neglected root crops with great potential for ensuring food security. Nigerian taro genetic diversity has been rarely reported, particularly using single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers.

Plants and Insect Eggs: First Report of a Katydid Using a Fern as Host for Oviposition

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 64, Issue 1, March 2026.
Ferns are the second most diverse lineage of vascular plants worldwide and are particularly abundant in tropical forests. However, the ecological significance of such remarkable diversity has been often underestimated. In this article, we report for the first time the observation of ferns, specifically Polytaenium cajenense (Desv.) Benedict ...
