Sentience in cephalopod molluscs: an updated assessment

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article evaluates the evidence for sentience – the capacity to have feelings – in cephalopod molluscs: octopus, cuttlefish, squid, and nautilus. Our framework includes eight criteria, covering both whether the animal's nervous system could support sentience and whether their behaviour indicates sentience.

A beetle antennae search algorithm based on Lévy flights and adaptive strategy

open access: yesSystems Science & Control Engineering, 2020
The beetle antennae search (BAS) algorithm is a new meta-heuristic algorithm which has been shown to be very useful in many applications. However, the algorithm itself still has some problems, such as low precision and easy to fall into local optimum ...

Particle Dispersion on Rapidly Folding Random Hetero-Polymers

open access: yes, 2003
We investigate the dynamics of a particle moving randomly along a disordered hetero-polymer subjected to rapid conformational changes which induce superdiffusive motion in chemical coordinates.

The ageing holobiont: crosstalk between telomere dynamics, oxidative stress and the gut microbiome

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The gut tissue is at the frontline of early onset of ageing. It exhibits high cell turnover rates and rapid telomere shortening, which can have systemic effects on the developing or senescing organism. We conducted a literature review of studies on the crosstalk between telomere length dynamics, telomerase activity, oxidative stress, and gut ...

Evidence for encounter-conditional, area-restricted search in a preliminary study of Colombian blowgun hunters.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Active search for prey is energetically costly, so understanding how foragers optimize search has been central to foraging theory. Some theoretical work has suggested that foragers of randomly distributed prey should search using Lévy flights, while work

Indirect Evidence for L\'evy Walks in Squeeze Film Damping

open access: yes, 2010
Molecular flow gas damping of mechanical motion in confined geometries, and its associated noise, is important in a variety of fields, including precision measurement, gravitational wave detection, and MEMS devices.

Probabilistic Multi‐Objective Energy Management System Model for an Energy Hub With PtG Technology for Cost Reduction and System Flexibility Improvement

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
Overview of the under‐study hub energy model showing the energy conversion and distribution among integrated sources and loads. ABSTRACT In this paper, a probabilistic bi‐objective energy management system (EMS) model is proposed for an energy hub (EH) equipped with renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic and wind turbine connected to the main ...

Front Propagation of Exponentially Truncated Fractional-Order Epidemics

open access: yesFractal and Fractional, 2022
The existence of landscape constraints in the home range of living organisms that adopt Lévy-flight movement patterns, prevents them from making arbitrarily large displacements.

The topology of Rayleigh-Levy flights in two dimensions

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Rayleigh-Lévy flights are simplified cosmological tools that capture certain essential statistical properties of the cosmic density field, including hierarchical structures in higher-order correlations, making them a valuable reference for studying the ...
