Recycling of l-citrulline to sustain nitric oxide-dependent enteric neurotransmission
Neuroscience, 1995Neurons that synthesize nitric oxide from arginine produce stoichiometric amounts of citrulline. We investigated whether nitric oxide-releasing enteric neurons have the capacity to recycle citrulline to arginine and thereby sustain nitrergic neurotransmission.

One Week of L-Citrulline Supplementation Improves Performance in Trained Cyclists
Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2019Abstract Stanelle, ST, McLaughlin, KL, and Crouse, SF. One week of L-citrulline supplementation improves performance in trained cyclists. J Strength Cond Res 34(3): 647–652, 2020—L-citrulline (CIT) is a nonessential amino acid that is touted as an ergogenic aid for athletic performance because of its purported ability to stimulate nitric ...

Transport of L-citrulline in neural cell cultures.
Developmental neuroscience, 2001Uptake of L-[(14)C]citrulline was studied in cell culture models of the main neural cell populations, in astroglia-rich primary cultures derived from neonatal rat brain, in rat glioma cells C6-BU-1, in cells of the murine microglial clone N11 and in the glioma x neuroblastoma hybrid cell line 108CC15 with neuronal properties.

Decreased serum L-arginine and L-citrulline levels in major depression
Psychopharmacology, 2017It has been suggested that endothelial dysfunction caused by a decreased endothelial production of nitric oxide (NO) may contribute to the consistently observed increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in physically healthy patients suffering from major depression (MD).

Metabolic capacity for l-citrulline synthesis from ammonia in rat isolated colonocytes
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1999Ammonia is present at high concentration in the colon lumen and is considered a colon cancer suspect. Furthermore, ammonia usually eliminated by the liver in the ornithine cycle is considered highly toxic to cerebral function when present in excess in the blood plasma. Therefore, the metabolic pathways involved in ammonia metabolism in colonocytes were

l-Citrulline recycling by argininosuccinate synthetase and lyase in rat gastric fundus
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2002The aim of this study was to investigate in rat gastric fundus whether L-citrulline, the co-product in the nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis catalyzed by neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), can be converted back to the nNOS substrate L-arginine. Immunohistochemistry showed that argininosuccinate synthetase and argininosuccinate lyase, that mediate ...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate nitric oxide (NO) production in patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension or preeclampsia and in controls. METHODS: Four groups of pregnant women were included: 17 patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension, ten with mild or moderate preeclampsia, 17 with severe preeclampsia, and 44 normotensive women matched for weeks of ...
