Resting cortisol concentrations in dogs presenting to a university teaching hospital with collapse

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Background The relationship between collapse and a diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism is not well understood in dogs. Hypothesis To assess the prevalence of episodes of collapse in dogs screened for hypoadrenocorticism, and to assess the prevalence of ...

Studies of Tiger Beetles. CLXXVIII. A new Lophyra (Lophyra) from Somaliland (Coleoptera, Cicindelidae)

open access: yesZooKeys, 2008
A new tiger beetle species, Lophyra (Lophyra) praetermissa n. sp. (Coleoptera, Cicindelidae), obviously a close relative of L. (L.) histrio (Tschitschérine, 1903), is described from the environs of Erigavo, Somaliland (northern Somalia).

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Comment on "Dynamic properties in a family of competitive growing models"

open access: yes, 2009
The article [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 73}, 031111 (2006)] by Horowitz and Albano reports on simulations of competitive surface-growth models RD+X that combine random deposition (RD) with another deposition X that occurs with probability $p$.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
