Labor Induction with Prostaglandins
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 1983Prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha have been used for labor induction for more than 10 years. Many investigations have shown that these prostaglandins are effective, and within certain dosage schedules, safe oxytocics, even though the systemic administration is accompanied by side effects, mainly from the gastro-intestinal tract.

Indications for induction of labor should be of such significance that abdominal delivery is justified if satisfactory labor and vaginal delivery fail to occur in a reasonable period. The results of induction of labor in a one year period at the Toronto General Hospital show a low incidence of induction and a low morbidity and mortality.

Induction of labor constitutes the initiation of regular uterine contractions for the purpose of effecting delivery before spontaneous labor begins. It should not be confused with augmentation of labor, which may constitute a method or series of methods that are applied to effect vaginal delivery after spontaneous labor has occurred.

Abstract Sixty-eight cases of bougie induction of labor have been analyzed, covering a nine-year period from 1940 to 1948, inclusive. The method is described. The literature has been reviewed and compared with the results obtained. In selected cases bougie induction remains a procedure of choice.

Misoprostol for induction of labor
Seminars in Perinatology, 2015Labor-induction rates have increased considerably in the United States as well as around the world. With up to half of all induced labors requiring cervical ripening, prostaglandins have been utilized to increase induction success and achieve vaginal delivery.

Induction of labor is a widely used practice. From 2016 to 2019, >1 in 3 women giving birth in the United States did so after undergoing labor induction. The obvious goal of labor induction is vaginal birth with minimal maternal or neonatal morbidity. To achieve this goal, criteria for failed labor induction are needed.

Induction of Labor with Prostaglandin
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 197140 patients received either prostaglandin (PG)F2alpha or oxytocin to induce term labor. The 2 groups were comparable with respect to cervical status prior to dilatation fetal station and parity. The mean maximum dose for oxytocin was 8.2 mU/min for the group with minimal cervical dilatation and 5.6 mU for those with more dilatation.

Labor induction with misoprostol
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1999Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E(1 ) analog, is widely used in the United States for cervical ripening and labor induction.
