Labridae The Blackbar hogfish Bodianus speciosus (Bowdich, 1825) was recorded from Madeira by several authors including Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al., 1986: 921-922; Gomon & Forsyth in Quéro et al., 1990: 870); Froese & Pauly (2007). Eschmeyer (2004) states as type locality 'St. Jago, Madeira', following earlier authors.

In the present investigation the diploid number 2n = 48 (NF = 58) has been determined for females, primary males, and secondary males of Coris julis from the Gulf of Palermo. Differentiated sex chromosomes have not been observed in the population under study.
