Dam engineering is currently experiencing a strong revival of labyrinth oriented weirs. Labyrinth weirs, with a repetitive constructional character and an increased specific discharge capacity, are a very good technical-economical compromise. The concept of Piano Key Weir (PKW), with alveoli developed in overhangs from a reduced support area ...

Arced Labyrinth Weir Flow Characteristics
2012The increase in predicted extreme flood event magnitudes has required the modification of many existing reservoir spillway flow control structures with more hydraulically efficient designs. The arced labyrinth is a relatively new, highly efficient, nonlinear weir design specifically applicable to reservoir applications.

Minimizing the hydraulic side effects of weirs construction by using labyrinth weirs
Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, 2019Abstract It is no doubt that weirs are one of the most important hydraulic structures that play a vital role in irrigation project. So, it is necessary to minimize the hydraulic side effects of weirs. Throughout this paper, experiments were conducted to investigate the suitable dimensions and shape of weir's crest to increase head loss, decrease ...

Staged and Notched Labyrinth Weir Hydraulics
2012ABSTRACT: Replacement spillways are frequently required to pass revised and larger design storm events. Generally matching the outflow hydrograph of the existing spillway is also a common design requirement. Labyrinth spillways can increase spillway discharge capacity.

Testing the Outflow Process over a Triangular Labyrinth Weir
Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 2017AbstractIn this paper, the dimensionless stage-discharge relation for a sharp-crested triangular labyrinth weir, determined in a previous study, is initially tested by some experimental runs carrie...

Experimental Studies on Flow over Labyrinth Weir
Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 2012AbstractLabyrinth spillway is the effective and economical solution to increase the discharge by increasing the spillway crest length without an associated increase in structure width. Use of labyrinth spillway is particularly suited to sites where the spillway width and upstream water surface are limited and larger discharging capacities are required.

Modifying the downstream hydrograph with staged labyrinth weirs
Journal of Applied Water Engineering and Research, 2017Labyrinth and piano key weirs are hydraulically more efficient than linear weirs of common width. As the spillway discharge efficiency increases, the required reservoir detention volume reserved for flood routing reduces and the maximum base-flow operating reservoir pool elevation can subsequently be increased (additional water storage) without a ...

An Elegant Solution: The Lake Brazos Labyrinth Weir
Civil Engineering Magazine, 2009To fulfill the potential of the City of Waco’s Lake Brazos, a labyrinth weir replaced the gated spillway on the Brazos River. The labyrinth weir was constructed on a flowing river over the foundation of the existing dam without expanding the dam’s footprint or rerouting the river during construction — at nearly half the cost of earlier estimates.

Experimental modeling of circular labyrinth weirs with different weir heights and configurations
2022Due to their zigzag geometry in plain view, labyrinth weirs require less crest length compared to linear weirs in the dam body or in the channels where they are placed. In this study, the effect of the number of cycles (N) and weir heights (P) of the semi-circular labyrinth weirs on the flow efficiency was investigated.

Hydraulics of flow over labyrinth weirs [PDF]
A review of the present state of knowledge related to the problems of labyrinth weirs and an experimental study of the flow in subcritical and supercritical conditions over labyrinth weirs having different slopes are presented in this thesis.A detailed examination of the following parameters affecting the flow and its variation along the weir has been ...
